When I interviewed Janine about her new contract at Digital Playground she listed this movie as one of the titles she would recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen her work. Since I have a copy here in the box of classic titles I pulled out of storage I figured this would be a good time to review it. It’s been over a decade since this movie came out, but it still stands out as a classic. I’m not sure if it had much cross-over appeal to non-porn viewers outside of SoCal, but Hidden Obsessions was a frequent topic on a local morning radio show for about a year. The “ice dildo” scene became water-cooler talk and legends were born. Andrew Blake had already done some great work, but this was the first chance for people outside of porn to see just how beautiful his stuff could be. It was our first look at Janine though and we all know how that turned out.
Like many of Blake’s movies, this one is done with a voice over. Janine is a fashion writer who has been commissioned by a private collector to write erotic stories. Her stories become the scenes. The first involves a couple who meet for a little mid-day romance. Steve Drake is the guy and Heather Hart is the girl. (Though I have to admit, she looks different in this scene.) At any rate, they meet in a hotel, she has on some nice lace lingerie and the fun begins. The cool-jazz background music is enough to drown out the sounds of sex, but it’s not a bad little scene. It is very quick with a few positions and a pop on her chest, but the tone has been set.
When the collector likes what he hears, he turns Janine loose to write about whatever turns her on. Naturally it’s another girl that gets her going. This is the big glass (or ice) dildo scene with Janine and Julia Ann. The quick-cut editing between the two women and Janine masturbating at pool side can be a bit frustrating at times, but you can see the quality of the work. It is also easy to see why people consider Janine to be one of the most beautiful women in the history of porn. She was absolutely perfect from head to toe. The dripping dildo scene is very hot and even if you aren’t into this style of porn you can see why it’s a classic.
Things slow back down again for a Randy West/Francesca Le tryst with a touch of leather. Those of you who just know Francesca from her recent hard-core scenes may not realize that was another of the super-pretty girls from the early 90’s. (Luckily for us, she did hot stuff even back then.) Using one of Blake’s favorite themes, he has her blindfolded while Randy pulls jewelry from her pussy. This scene has more of a slow motion feel, but Francesca sucking cock is always hot at any speed. The sex is very couples-friendly with some sensual shaving footage before a lighting-fast facial pop.
Her next story takes place under water which is always interesting. Though filled with slo-mo, the footage of two women playing in the water is incredible. It does make it hard to ID the women though. PJ Sparxxx I know, but the other girl is tougher. (Kim Wylde per the end credits.)
Heather Hart and Peter North hook up for a bit of latex fun. He gets behind her and works her pussy with his fingers. Heater looks great here and sucks with her usual expertise. Though the music is still loud and cheesy in its own right, the action is very good. While Peter is plowing her pussy, Heather gets a chance to play with P.J. Sparxx as well. He fucks PJ and then sits back as she power-slams Heather with a big strap-on cock. PJ is very hot in this scene, but as always, stays away from the cum, taking it on her tits instead of that gorgeous face.
Janine and Julia are together again, watching as Marc Wallice and Sunset Thomas get it on. The two blondes get in bed and provide eye candy for a slow motion scene of Wallice going down on young Sunset. Still natural, Sunset shows off a hot little body and would probably be impressing us with her sexual energy if the scene were shot at full speed. Instead we can only be impressed by the Elvis-sneer that seems plastered to her face. The sexual slumber party comes to an end with Wallice shoots jizz all over her pretty body.
The veggie sex thing does into over-drive when a couple of strippers (Skye Blue & Tracy West) fight-fuck over a man while he watches. That is followed up by a very artsy looking shower scene with Woody long and a busty brunette (Celeste, pre-surgery) sharing the spray. This is pretty much perfect couples porn with some amazing lighting thrown in for those of us who are still film geeks at heart.
Paula Price gets to turn Janine over her knee and spank her with a brush. OK, so it’s a girl/girl scene and it’s pretty soft, but still there is something here that is a major turn on. Janine looks great and Paul has one of those bodies that you just can’t take your eyes off of.
Deidre Holland and Jon Dough hook up on a boat. I love the sex in the outdoors angle, but the slow motion still kills it a bit. Always pretty, Ms. Holland was also a hot fuck when she was allowed to be and I just don’t think this scene works and anything other than extreme eye candy even with the facial finish.
Melanie Moore has a retro-pin up look during a scene with Randy West. The old school Hollywood dress and music go well with a short and rather tame fuck for the leggy blonde. We get some nice shots of her ass as she rides and then a big of a shot on the mouth. It’s moody and still pretty hot.
There is a big orgy scene that features Janine and PJ getting it on with each other as couples fuck all around them. Not much more than eye candy here, but it adds another layer to the mix. Peter North joins the mile-high club in a quick fantasy scene with Shelia Stone. Dominique Simone adds some danger to the action when she sneaks into a home looking to steal some top secret papers. Wallice catches her and the two fuck. It’s another short scene, but it is nice to see Dominique in a scene where she can show off her beauty as well as her big tits.
We get to see Janine in another lesbian scene, this time fucking Kim Wylde with an older man watching. Though not quite as hot as her tryst with Julia, this one doesn’t have any cut aways so we get to see not only Janine’s body, but also her outstanding energy as she works for the camera and their audience of one.
The movie ends when Janine decides to stop writing fantasies and start making some of her own. That should have made for a great sequel, but Janine had a date with Vivid and a decade of veggie love. This movie certainly holds up as a classic many years later. Janine was a phenomenon when she broke in and there haven’t been too many women to enter porn who can hold a candle to the way she looks in this movie. Overall I still prefer “Secrets” and “Night Trips” to this one for sexual energy, but “Hidden Obsessions” may be the best looking movie Andrew Blake has ever done. The scenes are very shot, there is way too much slo-mo and veggie sex to make me give it a ten, but for what it is, it’s perfect. Almost as perfect as Janine herself.

The production values are excellent, as with just about all Andrew Blake stuff.
Overall, the eroticism is very high, 'tho a couple of the scenes are on the lukewarm side.
The Janine - Julia Anne ice dildo scene. . . WOW! Also, this movie contains about a dozen scenes. . . lots of "bang" for your buck.
A few of the scenes are merely "pretty" as opposed to "hot".
Excellent film, especially for couples. Very beautiful to look at, I'd give it a 8. 5.
