Juan Curves Review
New York city, end of June. School is out and shy young “Joy” (Sharon Mitchell) is being pressed by her boyfriend (Jay Pierce) to have sex with him. Despite her great fear of losing him, she just won’t give it up. Her attitude to sex is about to take a very serious turn when shortly after two violent home invaders break in and take what they want, flesh and all.
“Joy” is an obvious and closely linked sexual satire/spoof of Michael Winner’s “Death Wish” which memorably starred Charles Bronson. Compared with the huge porno spoof market of the 1980’s, this is an incredibly loyal effort to recapture the spirit of a mainstream film.
In Death Wish, New York city’s police and press are baffled and astonished by a vigilante who is stalking street thugs and successfully killing them, seriously cutting down the amount of crimes committed which in turn inspires copy cats. In Joy, a young girl stalks men through Manhattan’s darkest alleyways and subway carts for sex after becoming addicted to it due to her attack. The men are blown out of their mind but for some reason, they still report it to the police and Lt Hancock (Jack Teague) is very serious about arresting her. The crime rate drops, copy cat crimes occur and a TV shock jock comes out in support of the perpetrator just as in “Death Wish”. It’s thankfully, also shot on location.
As with many of the 1970’s skin flicks, it often does resemble a genuine B grade feature film of the time. One shot of Sharon Mitchell just before the credits roll really stands out as belonging to another era when she sticks her head out the window of an apartment and declares “I want more”. It is filmed from another apartment block altogether and the camera pulls out and sweeps across to the skyline majestically. At that point with the soundtrack playing over, it really felt like something major was about to begin.
I’ve always been a large fan of Sharon’s, making this film a natural choice because she is the star and she appears in every scene besides two short sequences. It’s an absolute must for fans of her because she looks fantastically sweet, young, fresh and sexy here and puts in one of her best ever performances.
This is character driven sex and Sharon gulps up every scene, giving a performance that is very difficult to beat in this role. Besides the fact that it is quite controversial and numerous people may not watch this film purely on principle due to the mother (Crystal Sync)/daughter (Sharon Mitchell) sex scene but more significantly the home invasion rap… scene in the beginning, where after her initial horror, Joy declares “I want more” (which incidentally becomes the catch cry of her sexual appetite and therefore the films theme) and scares off her attackers with her insatiable lust. All of the scenes should get you off even if you’re a sceptic of the era.
One amazing scene which I should note takes place on a New York subway train. Sharon boards the train on 6th avenue late at night and there is a nerdy guy (Frank Kenwood) reading a book about how to pick up girls. Sharon pounces on him and they fuck on the floor of a moving subway, lights flashing and all. It’s amazing to think of the tenacity and innocence the industry had in those days.
A fine tribute to a major player in the industry, an excellent example of nostalgic golden era porn and a high level of sexual heat. 8 out of 10.
