Anyone who regards themselves as a genuine fan of early 'Golden Age' porn should see this film. It was made in 1976, when budgets meant that lavish productions with propeer scripts, locations - in this case a large country estate, and acting were not limited by time or finances.
The film has definitely aged in the passed 30 years and the fact that it has a dark brooding story line means that the lighting is kept to bare minimum. Added to this the fact that the sex is arousing becauase of it's context and build up and not because it's shot in a gynaecological fashion as much of todays is, it's fair to say that this is a genuinely erotic film with hardcore scenes. In fact the films claims to have had some success as released as a B-movie at drive thru's with the hardcore removed, which I don't have trouble believing.
If you have watched as many of the classic 70's films with the likes of Jamie Gillis and the gang as I have you start to realise that back then they really did push the boundaries far more than most porn does today. There is a huge theme of Incest running through the film and in the dark nightmare scene there is a woman pissing into a bath whilst another character sits in the bath watching on. Gillis is renowned for his kinky personality and he just so good at the whole intimidating demon behind the mirror character. I have always believed that Gillis and some of his 70's co-stars like John Leslie, Paul Thomas, Eric Edwards and Tom Byron could have acted in main stream TV or films and I believe that many of them were genuine broadway theatre actors who fell into porn as a means to an end or just to get on the screen.
Anyway, Gillis is his usual excellent self and the lead played by Catherine Burgess is very strong too. If the truth were told there isn't actually that much sex in this film as teh scenes are typically short in comparrison to mondern day films. Many of the scenes are dark and although filmed properly, as to be released on the 42nd Street cinemas, unless you are fan of the genre you might find them hard going.
For me the most captivating aspect of the film is the daughter of the lead character, Jennifer Burgess, played by Laura Nicholson. She doesn't actually have a sex scene in the film although it feels like she might at any moment. There is some ambiguity about her age which ofcourse might explain the fact that we don't see her naked or having sex, but surely all characters in porn films, even those back in the 70's have to be at least 18 years old. In real life I'm sure she was and it's a shame she didn't make any other films according to IMDB as I have to say she was absolutely beautiful.
Anyway, I highly recommend the film as a plot driven classic with high levels of eroticism and good acting. It's not wall to wall sex but what you get to see is contextual and meaningful which makes porn so much more enjoyable in my opinion.
